Alexandrite
Color changing variety of Chrysoberyl (Color changing because of the slight impurities of chromium).
Origin-: Discovered in the Ural Mountains in 1830 on the birthday of Czar Alexander of Russia, it makes hues change from green to red, which happens to be Russians imperial colors.
Color-: Blue, Grey, Green, Pink, Purple, Red, Violet, White, Yellow.
The color of Alexandrite changes under different lighting conditions-:
- If viewed in daylight, its color is greenish blue to dark yellow-green.
- If viewed in incandescent or candle light, its color is pink to red.
Luster-: Vitreous to greasy.
Hardness-: 8.5 on the Mohs scale with an orthorhombic crystal structure.
Transparency-: Transparent.
